Clipping refers to what happens to a waveform that exceeds an amplifier's (or preamplifier's) capability to amplify. So called because the top (peak) and bottom (trough) of the waveform are 'clipped' off, or made flat. The information contained in these sections is gone. Soft clipping attempts to scale the waveform before it clips, reducing the amount of audio information that is lost.

Clipping can damage equipment, most notably amps and speakers.
